NB Studio Furniture

25 x 200mm Southern Yellow Pine planks, with oiled finish.
St Leonards, March 2001

We were commissioned by a Photographer and Artist couple to design and make furniture for a historic seafront building they were in the process of refurbishing and transforming into their new studio space. The client had fondness for simple, modest design pieces such as those by Donald Judd or Enzo Mari, and asked if we could create 2 large work tables, a meeting/dining table, banquette, bench, storage unit, wall shelves and cupboards adopting such principles.

We chose to make everything from wide 1 inch thick Southern Yellow Pine plank, and designed pieces around the 200mm wide plank dimension and the modular proportions of a standard euro crate (600 x 400mm).

Along one wall down the length of the space we fitted a continuous run of of pieces that began with a fitted bench seat with storage beneath a flip top seat, alongside this is a countertop with storage beneath and a magnetic cork wall surface with a high level shelf unit above. To the right of this are 5no 800mm wide cupboards with adjustable shelves, and fully opening doors hung on custom made cranked butt hinges.

On casters at the end of the room we made a large plan chest for prints and paper works. The drawers are simple trays on wooden rail runners, and the top surface is a fitted green cutting matt.

Photographs by us after instal prior to the space being fully completed.
