Künstlerhaus Stuttgart - Bracket furniture
This family of furniture was part of our work at Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart to fit out the cafe bar created in collaboration with Matheson Whitely Architects.
We designed and developed furniture for self building at Künstlerhaus together with their members and local volunteers during a series of intensive making workshops.
The idea of the design has it origin in the distinctive concrete structure of the Künstlerhaus. It’s interior columns flow into the ceiling beams via elegant triangular ‘spreaders’ and this method of bracing the connection between horizontal and vertical becomes the central principle of the new furniture. Our design employs this triangular bracing between table legs and tabletops, and chair/stool legs and seat tops. A simple folded steel bracket element was produced in two different sizes and two different angles(90deg and 97deg) and is used to fix together the components of all the various furniture pieces for the new cafe and bar in the building.
